Members of the Valley Center High School bowling team participated in the annual YMCA Bowl-A-Thon tournament on Saturday, July 20th at Northrock Lanes.
Unlike the traditional tournament format the Hornets have become accustomed to, the Bowl-A-Thon is a social tournament to culminate the Greater Wichita YMCA’s Strong Community Campaign. Seniors Wyatt Redburn and Regan Awtry; 2019 Alumni Carter Myers; and Coach Phillip Van Horn participated in the event. Similar to the Jump Rope for Heart, Bowl-A-Thon is a two hour marathon format where teams play on behalf of a designated YMCA cause. The VC Bowlers played on behalf of the YSOAR/YScholars Summer School, a five week summer camp that serves 32 first and second graders who meet a literacy and socio-economic qualification. Van Horn started the camp in 2014 on a United Way grant, and USD 262 housed the camp in 2017.
The YSOAR/YScholars team raised over $700, making it one of the top 10 overall fundraisers of the nearly 100 team participants. Additionally, members of the Valley Center Bowling team joined forces with members of the VC Basketball, Softball, Women’s Soccer, Volleyball, and Dance teams to volunteer 65 hours over the course of the five week program. Highlights of the evening included Redburn’s 193, Myers 191, and Van Horn’s 190.
