Boys Varsity Wrestling, Wrestling · Hornets Take Down Mavericks

Tate Schurle Looks for a takedown earlier this year at the December Pools.

The Valley Center Hornets improved their AVCTL-II dual record tonight with a 39-31 victory over the Maize South Mavericks.  The Hornets had to play catch up after the first 3 matches.  Ben Carver fell to #5 ranked Ian Demoss 9-3 followed by Valley Center’s Adrian Smith getting  pinned by Drew Demoss.  At 120 pounds the Hornets were open giving the Mavericks an early 15-0 lead.  Alyeus Craig got the Hornets on the board first with a first period fall.  His teammate and lone senior on the team Devin Delforge stepped up with a first period fall.  Devin wrestled tonight knowing the Hornets would need his team points after being sick with a stomach bug all afternoon.  His pin put the Hornets back into the match and helped the team secure the victory.

The match of the night came at 145 pounds between VC’s Tate Schurle and Forsythe from Maize South.  Forsythe led for entire match earning takedowns, but Schurle kept battling and forcing the score tighter and tighter.  They young Hornet wore down his opponent in the 3rd and was able to get a much needed fall that would put the Hornets in the lead for good.  The Hornets were able to save a season point by not having to wrestle their heavyweight Tony Caldwell with the win secured.

The Hornets will be in action this Saturday with varsity at Bishop Carroll and JV at Rose Hill.  Both tournaments will begin at 8:30 am.
